about us > derek

Hi I’m Derek, one of the volunteers here at DYC. I’ve been involved with the guy’s since they moved to Clyde Square, about 17months ago. I didn’t realise then what I was getting myself into…

It feels as if it has been all go since day one, we as group a group have been involved in so much in such a short time, making the new mural for Youth Connections, making our own 5 min short films, one of which made it on to DVD to help raise awareness of some of the issues facing deaf people in a hearing orientated world. On top of this we have also shot a video translating the UN Convention of Children’s Rights into BSL, which has also been the catalyst for launching this website. We hope that this website will not only allow people to find out more about us but will also provide information or links that can help other deaf young people in their day to day lives.

In addition to all that we have nearly completed the John Muir awards, this is a conservation project that we have taken on as a group; the highlight so far has to be the river rocket!! Speeding up the Clyde with your head only inches away from the water not for the faint hearted. If this wasn’t enough we have also successfully completed ASDAN awards which will be presented near the end of August.

Our biggest achievement so far has been winning the BT Seen and Heard awards, this is a national award given out to young people making a real difference in their communities. It makes us proud that people are paying attention to what we are and hopefully this will give other people confidence to do their own thing.

I am not deaf and before coming along to the club I had only completed an Introduction to BSL. I have studied for my level one BSL but unfortunately I didn’t pass this time, however the guy’s at the club have got behind me and offered me some extra help for my next attempt fingers crossed, I’ll keep you up to date on my progress.

So why do I volunteer at the club? For the last three years I have been involved with various voluntary sector projects, both paid and unpaid. The guy’s here are a little bit different from other projects. They all genuinely look out for each other and are really concerned with making a difference to their local community. Besides they are also really good at taking the mick!! Just ask Kay (the butt of all our jokes)

Every week we get together we have a laugh, come up with great ideas and are always looking forward positively to the future!

How many people can claim that about their workplace paid or unpaid.

I don’t give up my time when I’m at the club, I enjoy my time.
